The Jumping Issue
How to Stop a Puppy from Jumping
You walk into your house with groceries, when all of the sudden an explosion of energy hits you and you drop EVERYTHING! Eggs, milk, meat, flour and the rest of what you just bought is all over the ground. Still wagging their tale, the culprit smiles and jumps on you again.
A jumping puppy/dog can be more than a headache, they can be a liability. I recently got a Golden Retriever pup about 4 months ago. Here's a picture of her...
Her name is Mia and instead of jumping, I've been having the issue of her climbing trees instead! LOL (Ok so this isn't Mia, but its too funny not to show)
This is Mia
This was a post of her a few weeks back on Instagram (@pawfectdogblog)
Now she likes to jump, I mean really likes to jump... I could be gone for 15 minutes, come back into the house and her excitement/joy overwhelms her so much that she starts acting like a rabbit! Its funny to watch and can put a smile on my face that she's that excited to see me, but I know what it can develop into.
We actually live next door to a family with younger kids (age 3-5). Right now, Mia would knock the kids over if she were to be around them, because of her uncontrolled jumping. In fact her jumping has gotten to the post of hurting us...
This is a picture of my Mom's arm where just 5 days ago, Mia jumped on her when she came to visit me. Sorry Mom!!!
Not only is she jumping on people, but she's jumping on my bed in the worst of times. When they start to jump on the bed, you know what that means if it's a rainy day... MUDDY BED
Anyways, I've been looking for the solution to this problem and I've come across the perfect video for learning how to knick this behavior so it doesn't get out of hand any further. Remember, if another person gets knocked over or hurt by YOUR dog, YOU are liable and at risk for whatever happens.
How to Train your Puppy to STOP Jumping
In this video, Todd Langston (Todd Langston is one of CESAR MILLAN'S head dog trainers) shows a few techniques that will stop the jumping once and for all. Jumping is correlated to ATTENTION. Train your pup to seek attention without needing to jump for it.
I hope today's topic helps others situations as much as it helped mine!
